El Fuerte Area
We spent 2 nights in the El Fuerte Hotel in the colonial town of El Fuerte.

Tropical Kingbird Gila Woodpecker Crested Caracara, Mexico's National Bird
We visited a Mayo Indian village. The church is where we met the village shaman. We were shown native dances, such as the Deer Dance. The coconut shells are used as drums. We also saw ladies making tortillas. The school was an interesting visit, and the GC Foundation paid for the rest rooms we used! Lunch was at the lovely home pictured at bottom..
We took a boat down the El Fuerte River to a place that had Nahuatl Petroglyphs, up to 1500 years old.

Hundreds of Black Vultures
Blue Heron on nest & Crested Caracara

One evening we were entertained by dancers from the local university. We also took a tour of the historical buildings in El Fuerte, including the municipal administration offices around this courtyard, and a hotel that was once the mayor's home, now the location of murals depicting the history of Mexico. The beautiful city square is traditional, and people come out in the evenings to stroll, just as in past times.
